The biological nanopore sequencing technology has the characteristics of portability, real-time, ultra long read length, and the ability to detect epigenetic modification information on nucleic acids. It has become the future development direction of gene sequencing technology and has received widespread attention from people. Developing a new generation of efficient, accurate, and low-cost nanopore sequencers can not only solve China's bottleneck problem in the field of gene sequencing and enhance its competitiveness in the international gene sequencing application market, but also have significant and far-reaching impacts on many fields such as life sciences, population health, agriculture, and public safety in China.

Recently, the kick-off meeting of "Bionanopore Gene Sequencer", a key special project of the national key research and development plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology "Basic Research Conditions and Research and Development of Major Scientific Instruments and Equipment", was held in Beijing by Huang Yihua, the founder and chairman of Beijing Polyseq Biotechnology Co., Ltd. and the chief scientist of the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Wu Aihua, Secretary General of the Analytical Instruments Branch of the Chinese Instrumentation Society, was invited to attend the meeting. The project guiding expert Chen Runsheng, academician of Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Long Mian, researcher of Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Wang Youjun of Beijing Normal University, Ren Jie, researcher of Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and senior engineer Zhang Bing attended the kick-off meeting. Researcher Liu Li, Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the project undertaking unit, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. More than 20 people, including project leaders, attended the meeting. In addition, Lou Jizhong, co-founder and chief scientist of Beijing Polyseq Biotechnology Co., Ltd., researcher of Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Wang Daqian, CEO of the company, and Dr. Song Guangtao, COO of the company were also invited to attend the meeting. The kickoff meeting will be chaired by Dr. Huang Yihua, the chief scientist of the project.

Secretary General Wu Aihua warmly congratulated the launch of the project. She introduced the importance attached by the Ministry of Science and Technology's "Major Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Special Project" to the major research plan of "Biological Nanopore Gene Sequencer", and expressed her expectations for the project to achieve breakthroughs in the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. She explained the regulations on project implementation, management, and acceptance on behalf of the 21st Century Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, particularly emphasizing the requirements for marking the results of key research and development projects. She also pointed out the characteristics of the personnel composition of this project, looking forward to strengthening communication and cooperation among various research groups, and wishing the project success.

The chief scientist of the project, researcher Huang Yihua, introduced the research background, content, implementation plan, and expected results of the project. Each project leader reported on the research foundation, implementation plan, and preliminary progress of the project one by one. After listening to the report, the project guidance experts conducted in-depth discussions and gave full recognition and high praise to the early foundation, team composition, research ideas, and integration goals of this project. They evaluated the key research and development directions, representative achievements, and shortcomings of the project, and put forward constructive suggestions for the next step of work.

Beijing Polyseq Biotechnology Co., Ltd. was established in 2021. Based on the self-developed nanopore sequencing chemistry and analysis of various new membrane protein nanopore atomic structures by the Huang Yihua research team, combined with technologies such as nucleic acid chemistry, protein engineering, artificial membrane construction and characterization, semiconductor integrated circuit chip design, deep learning, and genomics, we develop a new generation of nucleic acid and other biopolymer sequencers and supporting reagent consumables based on biological nanopores. Polyseq Biotechnology is committed to promoting China's sequencing industry from the source, reducing sequencing costs, truly bringing sequencing technology into medical institutions at all levels, changing disease diagnosis and treatment models, maintaining national life and health, and meeting the urgent needs of precision medicine in the era of big data.
